What Is the Food Like on CroisiEurope River Cruises?
Food is one of the most important and most consistently praised aspects of a CroisiEurope river cruise. For a company founded in France in 1976, culinary standards are not a marketing afterthought. They are embedded in the company's identity. Here is an honest, detailed account of what to expect at the table.

The Foundation: French Culinary Training
CroisiEurope's chefs are trained in the French culinary tradition a tradition that UNESCO has recognised as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, and that remains the foundation of professional cookery training worldwide. This means: proper stock-based sauces, classical technique applied to regional ingredients, correct timing and temperature, and genuine attention to the plate. This is not hotel catering with a French flag on it. It is French cooking applied to a river cruise context.
Regional Menus
One of CroisiEurope's most distinctive culinary features is the regional correspondence between the menu and the destination. The kitchen adapts as the ship moves through different countries and wine regions.
On the Danube in Austria: Wiener Schnitzel, Tafelspitz (boiled beef with horseradish), Gulasch, Apfelstrudel. Austrian white wines (Grüner Veltliner, Riesling from the Wachau) served at dinner.
On the Danube in Hungary: Lángos (fried dough with sour cream), Hortobágyi palacsinta (stuffed crêpes), Halászlé (fisherman's soup), Dobos torta. Hungarian Tokay wine.
On the Rhine in Alsace: Choucroute garnie (sauerkraut with pork), tarte flambée, Baeckeoffe (slow-cooked meat and vegetable casserole), kugelhopf. Alsatian Riesling and Pinot Gris.
On the Douro in Portugal: Bacalhau (salt cod prepared multiple ways), caldo verde (kale soup), sardines, francesinha, pastéis de nata. Douro red wines and port.
On the Seine in Normandy: Sole meunière, moules marinières, Camembert and Livarot cheeses, apple tarts with crème fraîche. Normandy cider and Calvados as regional alternatives.
Meal Structure
Breakfast (7:30 9:00am): Full continental spread baguettes, croissants, pastries, cold meats and cheeses, yoghurt, fruit, cooked option (eggs, etc.). Coffee, tea, juice. No fixed sitting arrive when you're ready within the window.
Lunch (12:30 13:30pm): Three courses with table service. House wine and beer included. A lighter alternative is always available for those who've been walking all morning and prefer not to overeat mid-day.
Dinner (19:00 20:30pm): The main event. Three courses with full table service, regional wine (French or local depending on destination), bread service, coffee included. The menu changes daily; the quality is consistent.
Afternoon tea/snacks: Many ships offer a cake or snack with afternoon coffee particularly on barge cruises, where the slower pace lends itself to afternoon refreshment.
Honest Assessment: What CroisiEurope Does Particularly Well
• Bread: French-standard bread service at every meal proper baguettes, not hotel bread rolls.
• Wine: Regional wine correspondence. Drinking the right wine in the right place is part of the cultural experience.
• Soup: French classical soup preparation consommés, cream soups, bisques is excellent.
• Cheese: Proper French and regional cheese service, not plastic-wrapped portions.
• Desserts: Classical French patisserie and regional pastry are consistently excellent.

What Could Be Better
• Some passengers (particularly Americans and Australians accustomed to larger protein portions) find European portion sizes modest.
• The menu can feel predictable on very long voyages (14+ days) repetition appears before the itinerary ends.
• Ultra-luxury operators (Scenic, Tauck) invest more in premium ingredients and fine-dining presentation. At double the price, this is not a surprise.
